1850s beaded sovereign purse with garnet beading.

This Museum is the second in the world devoted to purses and handbags and is a unique insight into the craft, style and imagination of this much worn item.
  • See the oldest purse in Australia - a man's purse dated 1650.
  • See beaded purses with ornate clasps dating from 1800s.
  • See purses of the flapper era.  Not at all practical?  No, all that a girl needs on her night out - lippy, eye makeup, powder puff, mirror and perfume.
  • See perspex handbags of the zany 1950s, the perfect 'retro' wear for today.

On display are 350 purses and handbags that might make you 'remember when' or wish this item could be that simple again.

Housed in one of Katoomba's historic houses, which complements the setting for these fascinating items.  This private collection promises a purse experience you have not had before, giving a unique insight into the history of costume and society itself.

School and special interest groups are welcomed, with guided tours and talks, by arrangement.  In conjunction with other Blue Mountain attractions, we can help you 'make a day' of your visit to the area.  Just ask us how.

Our GIFT SHOP stocks a variety of purse-related merchandise at competitive prices.
