News: Steam tram 140th anniversary!
Join us for an Extra Open Day on Sunday 29 September 2019 to recognise 140 years since the first steam tram on the streets of Sydney.
This is the exact day in 1879 when government run street transport began operating in this city.
- Invited guests will attend a ceremony at 11:00 – all welcome!
- Edward Loughry came to Australia in 1879 from the Baldwin Locomotive Works in the USA to assemble the first four Sydney tram motors and to implement the service on September 29th 1879. He went on to have a distinguished career with the Tramways Department and the NSWGR. To provide a unique personal connection, one of his descendants will give a talk about the Loughry family's 200+ years combined service with the NSWGR and Tramways.
- In addition, rarely viewed exhibits, previously unseen photographs and memorabilia will form part of a newly assembled display for this day only, including items on loan from private collections and Sydney Tramway Museum.
